So I'm sitting at home on a VERY atypical saturday night watching one of the three crappy channels I get and along comes an investigative news story all about Ashley. It was really strange that I actually caught the show b/c I hardly ever veg-out in front of the tube.
Anyhow, I really took interest in it b/c my room was on the same floor as Ashley's - What a tragedy her death was. I really hope this won't keep Xingo from happening in the future.
An Attorney friend of mine seems to think that the cruise will never happen again because of the incident. If any of you know this to be incorrect, please respond and give me some hope that an event will actually take place again in the future... Xingo was one of the best experiences I've ever had.
If anyone wants to take a look at the CBS News URL about Ashley's death, here it is:

Re: Ashley Barnett 's Death
Mon, September 25, 2006 - 3:50 PMThanks for posting this, Sam.
My wife, son, and I were in the room next door ~ as in, we shared a wall.
This story helps a lot.
We were freaked out during the cruise and yet have a lot of mixed emotions about the goings-on from the girl's death to spending the next three days not knowing if there was (or not) a body three feet away.
Our hearts go out to Miss Barnett's family and loved ones. And also to anyone that was affected by this tragedy.
We hope that there will be another Xingolati. Then again, we're glad (in a way) that Xingo isn't happening, so soon, as I don't think that we're quite ready to deal with it psychologically.
Again, thanks for posting ~ I'm not so stoked to relive those days but it's good to have some answers to many questions that we've had over the past year.

Re: Ashley Barnett 's Death
Mon, September 25, 2006 - 5:24 PMunfortunately i think CBS' coverage of this will make it harder for Xingolati to ever happen again. i didn't see the televised show but read the article linked. it's a terribly written article, first of all, and secondly it paints a really negative picture of the community aboard.
while this was a great tragedy, i don't think it warrants this kind of conspiratorial coverage. i think she was most likely drunk and accidentally took the methadone thinking it was cold medicine, but of course CBS is framing this as a some sort of cover-up, either on the part of the boyfriend or the cruiseline, but either way, a cover up. perhaps because she was a beautiful budding starlet?
and the closing thoughts? so dramatic --
"Somewhere in some port, some 25 year old girl is getting on a cruise ship with some friends. What do you want their parents to know?" Lagattuta asks Jamie Barnett.
"Don’t let 'em go. Don’t let 'em go," she says."
how many 25 year olds check in with their moms about where they go and what they do? the victim was an adult, not some teenager on spring break. i'm sure the parents want answers, but unlike the other story mentioned in that article wherein foul play seems obvious, i think in ashley's case it was an accident, and covering her death like this does little or no good and is only perpetuating fear and stereotypes about the community that was involved.
thanks for posting this. i do hope those who loved her find a way to get closure. i too wondered if anything was ever resolved. -

Re: Ashley Barnett 's Death
Tue, January 9, 2007 - 10:52 PMHi guys,
Ashley was my best friend. I read the above posts and I just wanted to clear some things up. I have known Ashley since I was 13 yrs old. I'm 25 today. We went through high school together and we were close friends until she passed away. Ashley was an amazing person and I can assure all of you that she never willingly took any drug the entire time I knew her. We had a lot of friends and myself included got into plenty of trouble but she was always the one telling us how wrong we were to do some of the things we did. I am not trying to preach to anyone because I'm definitely not the one to do that. She pictured the cruise like most would. A cruise ship that would include great buffets, laying out by the pool, fine dining and other fun activities. I was really excited for her because I have always wanted to go on such a cruise. Her boyfriend was a good friend of mine for many years. He was well aware of the type of cruise that this was because it was very much his scene. From what we know at this point from all the video that was gathered and so forth was pretty much spelled out in the CBS special. She wanted to go to sleep while Geoff wanted to continue his night. They had some sort of argument and she stayed in the room. He stashed his Methadone in a Cold Medicine box to hide it while boarding the ship. It's possible that she woke up in a daze, didn't feel well and simply took it by mistake. A person that has never been exposed to the drug can very easily die from a very small amount. Of course there is another scenario that I won't go into because it's just something you don't write on the Internet. Anyway guys my point in writing this is that I owe it to her. I would never judge anyone for making assumptions especially when drug abuse is so common. If I were in your shoes I would assume the same thing. A girl that lived as clean of a life as she did deserves to have someone like me write a few lines in an attempt to let everyone know just how special she was to the people that loved her the most. I would also like to add that they tested a hair sample only to determine that there was absolutely no prior drug use. Take care guys and thanks in advance for reading this.

Re: Ashley Barnett 's Death
Fri, August 29, 2008 - 5:45 PMI am so sorry for this poor girls demise. I truly believe her boyfriend didnt do it. I hope her Mom can live with some peace someday. I will let my 25 year old go though...you cannot stop them from living.
